In-Person Memoir Writing Workshop

with Alison Wearing
Vancouver & Stratford (Ontario, Canada)

WORKSHOP FORMAT*

In these 2-day workshops, we will do a deep examination of a short (500-word) piece of writing from each person, identifying and discussing its strengths, as well as the possibilities for strengthening and refining the writing until it stands up and sings [yes!]. While 500 words might not seem like a lot, we can see a lot ‘in micro’ that tends to apply in macro, meaning that a great deal can be learned by paying close attention to a short piece (rather than looking more widely at something longer).

Over the course of two days, we will also look at pertinent elements of writing craft, and the nature and arc of each person's larger writing project (or ideas for same).

Participants will leave with a detailed edit of their submission, a fresh understanding of how to revise and clarify their writing, and with clear direction on the next stages of their project.

Participants may also book a private 45-minute with Alison within 3 months of the workshop to work on a 1000-word piece or discuss their larger writing (i.e. book-length) project.

This workshop is ideal for people who have some experience with memoir writing (i.e. the Memoir Writing Ink course or equivalent) and are interested in taking a detailed look at their writing and making it the best work it can be.

10 am - 4 pm each day. {See dates below.}

Workshop size: 8-10 people. Short application required.

*Please note: The 1-day workshops previously advertised have been postponed until later in the fall.
