According to Mary Oliver, "Ekiwah takes to metaphor as to a Wise Brother. To speak of Ekiwah, his spirit and his work, is a gift in itself."

This 4-week workshop is for anyone who is interested in the dance of memoir and poetry. While poetry is often autobiographical in content and inspiration, this workshop will focus specifically on the ways poetry can enhance memoir writing and vice versa.

No matter how well acquainted we are with poetry, our writing is the richer for it. So if you are looking to enrich your writing, this workshop is for you.

HOW TO REGISTER

Ekiwah Adler-Beléndez was born with cerebral palsy, weighing 900 grams - the size of a mango cupped in one hand, turning purple while trying to breathe. Because of this, he travels the world in a wheelchair.

His first three books of poetry were published when he was 12, 13 and 16. His work attracted wide attention, including that of the American poet Mary Oliver, who wrote the preface his book The Coyote's Trace.

In Ekiwah's own words: "Poetry is my antidote against solitude, a way to embrace my body and my wheelchair, to move past and within limits into nearly unbound imaginative freedom. That's the freedom I seek to share with others. Poetry can save lives. I say it with such certainty because it saved mine."

Currently, Ekiwah brings poetry to juvenile detention centres in Mexico, working with young men aged 14-18 accused of a crime and detained until their trial. www.ekiwahadler.com
