A BETTER WRITER

A (lively!) writing workshop with
bestselling author Alison Wearing

Note: This is the second workshop in this series.

I could not possibly count the number of memoirs I have read,
but I am able to count the number that feel like masterpieces.

This is one such book.

Alice Munro says, “To read this book is to enter a state of enchantment.”
It is also to witness a master craftsman of memoir.

There is so much to be learned from this gorgeous book that I return to it regularly, just to be nourished by it, and I'd love share my insights and enthusiasm in the form of a workshop.

Over the course of an hour, I’ll highlight some of Lane’s majestic carpentry of language, the imagery that gives his prose such contour and beauty; the book’s ingenious structure and the way its cradles a life; the way Lane travels seamlessly across time and space, weaving memory and present moment awareness; examples of different moments sketched with such tenderness that we can only be grateful to have witnessed such grace.

As was the case the last time I offered a workshop of this kind (featuring Maggie Smith’s You Could Make This Place Beautiful), this isn’t only about celebrating and learning from this book.
It is also about learning to read as a writer and being able to learn from every book you read.

Two Small Things:
1. This book has two different titles: In Canada, it is called There is a Season, whereas in the US and (I believe) the rest of the world, the book was published as What the Stones Remember.
2. You do NOT need to read the book to benefit from this workshop, but obviously I encourage you to read it at some point! It is available through all the usual channels or you can learn a bit more about it HERE.
