and first 3 chapters.

Before you begin · Optional

Creating a Writing Practice

For those who need it, you can begin with ‘Creating a Writing Practice’ and ‘Simple Ways to Write Every Day,’ plus a few breaths of inspiration and humour (always!).

Chapter One

The essentials of memoir

Understand what makes a personal story work as memoir.

If you are already an experienced writer, you can skip straight to Chapter One, where you will be guided through the essentials of memoir:

  • what distinguishes it from autobiography or journal writing,
  • why memoir is not simply ‘here’s what happened to me’ [this is critical!],
  • the concept of ‘sky writing’ [equally critical!]
  • and what we need to consider and address for our story to be of interest and value to others.

Chapter Two

The gift of ‘working small’

You’ll learn to focus your story in powerful ways and keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed as you write.

Chapter Two examines the gift of ‘working small’—even (and especially) when working with large themes or projects.

Explore and find inspiration

As always, this chapter offers a variety of examples, author interviews and reading recommendations, as well as links to places where you can find inspiration and/or publish your work.

Chapter Three

Separation and Transformation

Recognize two essential elements of a successful memoir.

Chapter Three, the final chapter of the Memoir Morsel, looks at the themes of Separation and Transformation, two of the most essential (and often overlooked) elements of any successful memoir.

Testimonials

From Memoir Writing Ink students

“My first publishing success could not have happened without Alison Wearing and Memoir Writing Ink.

I remember signing up for the class, hesitating because I thought my life was so ordinary that I had nothing significant to say.

This course taught me that we all have interesting stories. We just need the creative roadmap to figure out how to tell them!”

“After 4 years of writing on my own, I needed guidance.

Every tidbit Alison shares about the craft of memoir makes me gasp or hold my breath. Her generosity is helpful beyond description. I have more clarity and understanding than ever.

My.Mind.Is.Blown!”
