Whether you are working on a book, planning to submit to a contest or magazine, or you just want to get your writing into the best possible shape,
this course will help you do that.

No writer begins with a perfectly crafted story. In fact, most writers don't even begin with a perfectly crafted sentence! Our first attempt at transforming our ideas into writing is just that: an initial effort to pull our thoughts into form.

It's not meant to be great. It's certainly not meant to be beautiful. It's meant to be a beginning, the equivalent of a sculptor placing a hunk of clay onto her worktable and seeing the basic shape and potential of her material.

In some ways, the real job of writing only starts once we have a first draft. Only then can we see what we have to work with and what it might become.

The next stage of the process, the work of revisions, is when we become a sculptor of our ideas, as well as our own first editor. And every writer, even one who goes on publish and work with professional editors, needs to be her own best editor first.

The Art of Revision

This course will allow you to 'peer over the shoulders' of writers and editors to see what they notice when they work on (or judge) a piece of writing, and how they would go about improving it. (Believe me, you will never look at your work the same way again!)

You will also come away with a detailed list of important considerations and questions to ask yourself while revising, as well as powerful tools and suggestions for becoming your own best editor.

In addition to lessons on the art of revision, this course includes an examination of some of the most critical elements of writing craft (these can sometimes make the difference between being seriously considered for a prize and being dismissed after the first paragraph), as well as in-depth sessions on what makes winning stories stand out. There is also a wonderful interview with the journalist and award-winning memoirist Anne Bokma, 2021 judge of the Amy Award, in which she shares her experience and numerous suggestions for successfully pitching and publishing works of memoir in newspapers, magazines, and as books.
